Dog behavior isn’t always what it seems…

This past week a post was making its way around Facebook that described how a family was ‘giving up’ their dog because “he is gay”. They went on to describe the behavior their pal was exhibiting. Basically what they described was he mounts another male dog and seems to simulate the sex act.

People who have a basic understanding of canine behavior know this has nothing to do with sex and everything to do with testing the dominance of the two dogs. Matter of fact you’ll see female dogs do this from time to time too. Don’t just take it from me, here’s was a knowledgeable veterinarian has to say:

David S. Spiegel, VMD, who has a behavioral veterinary practice near Swarthmore, Pa., says in unneutered and unspayed dogs under a year old, humping is usually sexual in nature. But in older dogs it can be a sign of dominance, a reaction to something that has excited the dog, like visitors arriving, or a sign that a dog hasn’t been socialized correctly and doesn’t know appropriate canine behavior.

Dogs are Wacky!

Screen Shot 2013-02-02 at 8.23.38 AMBeing ignorant of typical dog behavior has caused many a fine friend to be ‘let go’; dumped, given up, euthanized, killed. This drives all dog appreciators nuts! With a simple Google search these folks cold have leaned what their pooch was up to and dealt with the facts rather than giving him up as some sort of ‘deviant’ by their twisted judgment. A great book on the topic is:

Canine Behavior: A Photo Illustrated Handbook, by Barabara Handelman
